“In Character,” explores the relationship between identity, transformation, and landscape. Shot using pre-existing locations in Butte, Montana, it features individuals dressed up as different characters from cinema, music, and literature. The costumes not only reconfigure the subjects -- enabling them to temporarily embody new identities–but they also reimagine the small-town locations where the photographs were originally taken. In the process, locales in Butte are transformed into a collection of storybook backgrounds, film stills, vintage photographic settings, animations, and illustrations. The images themselves reflect on both the fluid nature of identity and place, and they serve to question the stereotypes that misinform how we see the people and the landscapes of rural America.
